THE HOLLYWOOD CULTURE BENEFIT @ THE KEY CLUB WRAP UP

Friday night's benefit concert at the Key Club was a massive success. SHP thanks all of the contributions from our sponsors: Ed Hardy Shoes, Hustler Hollywood, Polite In Public, Sound Art L.A., and of course all of the helpful staff at The Key Club. We were able to raise a significant amount of money for Sound Art L.A., which is a charity that raises money to improve music programs in public schools.
There were over 800 people through the door to enjoy fantastic performances by some of L.A.'s best bands. Porcelain, and New Kingdom rocked a completely packed house, with a secret performance by DJ Quik, and Powder! Pin up Girls performed a sultry, sexy set that raised the temperature in the venue.
We also had several celebrities in attendance. Laura Prepon was spotted, DJ Quik, ABC's Greek's Scott Michael Foster and Jake McDorman, and drummer Chris Black from The Dollyrots. Here are some photos from the event:

Rapper, producer, musician, cartoonist Shock-G is the mastermind behind multi-platinum artists Digital Underground. Formed in Oakland in the late '80s, DU dropped theirfirst single, "Your Life's a Cartoon" b/w "Underwater Rimes,"in 1988, generating sufficient notoriety to land a deal with Tommy Boy. “Underwater Rimes” went to #1 in Amsterdam, Holland. While the second single, "Doowutchyalike,"charted in Europe, it was "The Humpty Dance"-featuringShock's Groucho-nosed alter ego, Humpty Hump-that propelled the group toplatinum status in the US. Sex Packets (1990), thealbum that followed, rewrote the book for funk-based hip hop with its extensiveuse of George Clinton grooves, anticipating by two years the sound Dr. Drewould use to anchor The Chronic. '91 saw DU in the Chevy Chase/Dan Aykroydcomedy “Nothin' But Trouble,” performing the hit "Same Song"from “This is an EP Release.” This was also the recording & big-screen debutof 2pac, for whom Shock would later produce the hits "So Many Tears"& "I Get Around." Subsequent albums for Tommy Boyinclude Sons of the P (1991), featuring the smash "Kiss You Back," & “The Body-Hat Syndrome” (1993). DU has since dropped two indiediscs, “Future Rhythm” (Critique 1996) & “Who Got the Gravy?” (Jake 1998), as well as “TheLost Files” (1999), a collection of rare & non-released tracksavailable exclusively through the group's web-site, ShockG.com. They continueto record & tour, having earned a reputation as a live act without peer onthe hip hop club circuit.

Learn to Shred with Some of Rock’s Finest

Inaugural Session of Shred School to include Adam Jones of Tool, Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots, Stephen Carpenter of Deftones and MORE!!!

(West Hollywood, CA, June 21th) – On August 4th, the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles will serve as a classroom for budding guitar players and their highly illustrious instructors. For Shred School’s first annual session, aspiring guitarists will be offered a rare opportunity to bask in the presence of their rock n’ roll idols. With a jam-packed schedule of clinics, pupils will receive more than just autographs and photos with legendary band members – Rockstar “professors” will answer questions about how they were able to achieve rock stardom, and the many steps it takes to get there.

This exclusive one-day conference will prove rewarding for everyone who has ever wanted to join a band, start a band, or just rub shoulders with and hear stories from some of the world’s biggest guitar players. Tickets will be available via the Shred School website – www.shred-school.com. And early bird gets the worm! Be one of the first students to register to receive a special discount.

Shred School’s faculty is comprised of multi-platinum sellers like TOOL’s Adam Jones, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS’ Dean DeLeo, the DEFTONES’ Stephen Carpenter and former MARILYN MANSON axeman John 5, as well as rock gods in-the-making like DRAGONFORCE’s Herman Li and AVENGED SEVENFOLD’s Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates. Proving that rock n’ rollers can and will rise before noon, the day-long schedule offers a diverse curriculum of classes with topics like purchasing the right gear, breaking into the industry, creating a band image – the list goes on. Even lunch will allow students to interact with their heroes and offer chances to win gear from one of several sponsors.

Act now to reserve your space at Shred School – the one school where the students wish the classes were longer. For additional information, also check www.myspace.com/shredschool.

KRS-One's son dead in apparent suicide

07/11/2007 10:47 AM, AP

The son of hip-hop legend KRS-One was found dead in his apartment in an apparent suicide, authorities said Tuesday.

Randy Hubbard Parker, 23, died of a gunshot wound to the head and the death was classified as a suicide, said Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office investigator Mark Guilbeau.

Parker had suffered a long battle with depression, his mother, Simone G. Parker, said in a statement on Tuesday. He was found on Friday.

Parker was a graphic designer and fashion entrepreneur seeking employment in Atlanta. His family said a private memorial service will be held on July 18, which would have been Parker's 24th birthday.

A memorial service in New York, where Parker was born, is scheduled for August.

KRS-One is a rap pioneer whose hits include "Criminal Minded," "Black Cop," and "The Bridge is Over."

Moreover, we’re looking to reschedule these dates as soon as possible, within the next six weeks if a date acceptable to both artist and venue can be determined. On behalf of A List Talent Agency and Southside Touring I extend my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you, and I ask for your understanding in this time of tragedy for Mr. Lloyd.

NOVEMBER 8th KEY CLUB (MORONGO)
NOVEMBER 9th THE GALAXY (SANTA ANA)
NOVEMBER 10th KEY CLUB (HOLLYWOOD)

Wasalu Jaco aka Lupe Fiasco, is a mixed breed; a deep thinker with a wild imagination, a quick wit and a sharp tongue. A young man of humble beginnings, Lupe was reared on Chicago's West Side by conscious, conscientious parents who, though divorced, explained the complexities of life and nurtured an understanding beyond what the normal mind could comprehend. "My mother is on some real intelligent type deal," explains Lupe. "She's a gourmet chef who traveled the world...but she's in the hood. She's like the mother of the hood. When she cooks, everybody comes to the house. From the dope dealers, prostitutes, to the kids on the block...everybody can come sit down and talk with her." His father is a "colorful cat" that was big in the Black Power movement. Trained in both the armed forces and the martial arts, he raised his son to have an appreciation for the tools of war. As an mc, Lupe wields his mic sword like a samurai - a killer with an appreciation for the art. Often times, he's an artist with an appreciation for the kill.

PRESS COVERAGE

Naked Eyes Goes Public

By: Nick Green

The Daily Breeze

For the last 21 years, Pete Byrne has reveled in the anonymity of South Bay suburbia, raising two kids and becoming an active part of the community with few realizing who he really is: a one-time pop star.

But now the lead singer of 1980s synthpop duo Naked Eyes -- best known for its cover of the Burt Bacharach-penned standard "Always Something There to Remind Me" that was an MTV-propelled worldwide hit -- is blowing his cover.

Byrne has emerged from his self-imposed obscurity to capitalize on the resurgent interest in '80s music, re-forming Naked Eyes and playing a series of shows for the first time in more than two decades. The group performs at Hollywood's Viper Room tonight.

"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" perhaps, but the English-born Byrne, 52, has mixed feelings about his re-emergence into the public eye, while laughing at the suggestion he's been in a lengthy semi- retirement.

"I suppose from the point of view of not having really huge hits, it could be perceived as that," he said. "Basically I've been thinking about doing this for 10 years and it's just taken awhile. ... It's going to bring up my profile around here a lot."

Interest in '80s music, perpetuated by such television programs as VH1's "Bands Reunited," shows no signs of abating. Radio stations, for instance, continue to add '80s songs to their formats - - proof that audiences "Just Can't Get Enough."

Sean Healey, a Los Angeles promoter who booked Byrne into the Viper Room, is capitalizing on the trend.

He has staged numerous shows featuring '80s acts, including an appearance by The English Beat ("I Confess") last week at Gardena's Normandie Casino.

"At these shows you get a combination of younger kids who are just discovering the '80s and people in their late 30s who get to relive it," Healey said. "It was feel good, happy music and with so much disaster and war and politics going on in our culture today this kind of brightens things up for a minute. Plus, it's cool to be retro."

While declaring "Don't You Forget About Me," Byrne finds the popularity for '80s acts slightly unnerving after so long out of the limelight, even as a member of a relatively faceless duo like Naked Eyes. Which is why when Byrne did reluctantly acquiesce to an interview he deliberately wore dark sunglasses for the photo (although, hey, it perpetuates the pop star image, too).

He requested the nondisclosure of the exact city -- or even the general area -- where he lives with his Los Angeles-born wife, Elena, and where the couple has raised a daughter, 14, and a son, 20 (no names, please).

And he asked that the exact nature of his community activities not be identified lest some star-struck thirtysomething mother ask "Don't You Want Me?"

"It's the closest you can get to living in England, but without the rain," is all he'll enigmatically say about where he lives.

Byrne has kept busy in the intervening years.

He released a solo album on a small Utah-based synthpop label, sang on a Stevie Wonder album, and wrote and produced an album for the Olsen twins.

But Naked Eyes remains his claim to fame, especially the lush, sweeping "Always Something There to Remind Me," which Bacharach himself reportedly said was his favorite version.

Byrne seems as nostalgic as '80s music fans as he recalls recording the vocal track for the "magical" song in a virtually unprecedented single take at the Beatles' Abbey Road studio complete with the harpsichord used on "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."

"That song was just a gem," he said. "They still play the hell out of it (on the radio) -- it's so unbelievable."

But Naked Eyes' "Dance Hall Days" proved brief.

The band broke up after a handful of top 40 hits -- "Promises, Promises" was another -- and recorded just two albums within a couple of years. Byrne, who decamped to the South Bay, and his partner in the band, keyboardist Rob Fisher, agreed not to use the Naked Eyes name separately. Fisher's ill health -- he died in 1999 from complications related to stomach surgery -- ended any hope of a comeback together.

But earlier this year Byrne finally formed a four-piece band and played a couple of concerts, including two opening for fellow '80s band ABC ("The Look of Love") in Salt Lake City and Chicago.

The next thing Byrne knew, an agent contacted him and he's been playing weekend concerts ever since. Curiously that's something that Naked Eyes, which was primarily a television and video act, never did much of in its heyday.

"The nice thing about it is that obviously people know the songs," Byrne said. "So, it's quite nice going out on stage."

An acoustic album of cover songs is in the works followed by a third Naked Eyes album that's slated for release early next year in conjunction with a full-scale tour.

Last Sunday a show in Philadelphia was taped in high definition for eventual broadcast on DirecTV.

And Byrne already has a New Year's Eve gig lined up at the Morongo Casino and Resort in Cabazon near Palm Springs with Colin Hay of Men at Work ("Who Can It Be Now?") renown.

Byrne has turned down some '80s exploitation shows -- for instance, an appearance on NBC's short-lived "Hit Me Baby One More Time," an American Idol-like program for such retreads as Flock of Seagulls, Tiffany and Vanilla Ice.

But for the most part, Byrne is thoroughly enjoying showing his "True Colors" by reliving the '80s era on stage, even if he does worry about potential disruptions to his daily life.

"I'm just having so much fun," he said. "I never did take it that seriously. I'm just feeling really happy and feel privileged to be doing it -- it's fantastic."
